Melanosomes are thought to originate from endosomal precursors (5) and subsequently undergo a series of maturation stages, each characterized by typical ultrastructural morphology and melanin content: stage II and III correspond to non-pigmented and partially pigmented immature melanosomes, respectively, and stage IV to fully melanized mature organelles (6, 7).
The 'pads' and 'cups' stages corresponded approximately to stages S1/S2 (pads) and S3/S4 (cups) described in [ 17]. Green fruit were fully rounded green berries, pink berries were partially pigmented but still firm, and ripe berries were fully colored and soft.

The overexpressed gene was expected to result in darker flowers, but instead produced less pigmented, fully or partially white flowers, indicating that the activity of chalcone synthase had been substantially decreased; in fact, both the endogenous genes and the transgenes were downregulated in the white flowers.

Samples were prepared to simulate a partially soluble verdigris pigment bound in gum arabic on gelatin-sized rag paper.
The practical conditions of the sample, i.e., gelatin-sized rag paper with partially soluble verdigris pigment bound in gum arabic narrowed down the potential remedial chemicals to 1H-benzotriazol in ethanol and tetrabutylammonium bromide in ethanol.
On the other hand, the surface of PCC sample contained both areas where no biofilm had formed (Figure 4f) and areas where loosely packed S. aureus capsules with a height of 400-700 nm partially covered the pigment coating (Additional file 1: Figure S3).
