Although the deep part of the fault was incorporated to account for the effect of observed M7-class earthquakes on vertical movement, the modeled fault area was about five times overestimated compared to the historical ~M7 earthquakes.

The actual parameterization of fault geometry was performed as follows: We firstly set the top locations of the faults by providing control points so that they can trace the displacement discontinuities in the observation data; shallowest part of the faults is thus non-planar.
The combined area (S a) of two asperities estimated around the shallow and deep parts of the fault was 240 km2, which agrees with the scaling relationship S a versus M 0 reported by Irikura and Miyake (2001).
However, we can further observe a remarkable amount of the strike-slip component particularly on the bent parts of the fault where the fault is obliquely oriented against the stress axes.
