Taken together, it is tempting to speculate that the loss of these protective mechanisms, at least in part, renders AIS patients more susceptible to environmental factors, and thus eventually leads to the development and progression of scoliosis.
Interestingly, high-magnification single confocal images indicated that these Kv2.1-positive clusters did not overlap with the Nav1.6 containing parts of AISs (Fig. 3K).
We found that 79.8% of MNs (from n = 35) expressed both Nav1.1 and Nav1.6 in a rather complementary fashion, with Nav1.1 expressed in the proximal part of the AIS, close to the soma, and Nav1.6 found more strongly expressed towards the distal AIS.
