In principle this allows for fundamental, overtone and second overtone processes.
However, it should be possible to unambiguously show that overtone processes are in fact being observed by using isotopic substitutions.
When viewing IETS overtone processes in combination with quantum interference, it is therefore not surprising that a large or an even larger overtone peak than for the corresponding fundamental mode can be observed.
