'overstatement' is a correct and usable word in written English.
You can use it to refer to an exaggerated statement or claim that is not completely true. For example: "The mayor's claim that the city was the safest in the country was clearly an overstatement."
Journalists, never shy of overstatement, are complicit, and politicians need no encouragement.
