A unique multiethnic population of iron deficient individuals was identified in the Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening (HEIRS) Study.
To identify new genomic locations associated with iron deficiency, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed using DNA collected from white men aged ≥25 y and women ≥50 y in the Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening (HEIRS) Study with serum ferritin (SF) ≤ 12 µg/L (cases) and iron replete controls (SF>100 µg/L in men, SF>50 µg/L in women).
However the SF of 25,435 African Americans (described in the study as Blacks) was measured in the Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening Study (HEIRS).
The FDS sample size was smaller than in other studies such as the Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening (HEIRS) study, which had ∼100,000 participants, but HEIRS was conducted in the general population and relied on self-report for diabetes diagnosis, and no complication or mortality data have been reported (21).
12 In the HEIRS (HEmochromatosis and IRon Overload Screening) study that screened 99,711 North American participants, serum ferritin levels were elevated (>300 μg/L in men, >200 μg/L in women) in 57% of female and 88% of male C282Y homozygotes.
It is noteworthy that two population studies, the Hemochromatosis and Iron Overload Screening and the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities, reported that C282Y homozygosity was associated with lower total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels (Adams et al. 2009; Pankow et al. 2008).

Since oxidative tissue damage is thought to result from mitochondrial iron overload, drug screening studies have focused on ameliorating cardiac iron accumulation using iron chelators [9], [10], and enhancing respiratory chain function using coenzyme Q10 and/or reducing oxidative damage with antioxidants [11], [12].
So it's a shame when you see headlines such as the Independent's "Overload of screen time causes depression in children", or the Daily Mail's "TV is making children unhappy" – the study didn't say anything like this at all.
Slowly, a new kind of content is evolving: TV shows and movies that intentionally overload the screen with more text and sub text than the human mind can absorb on the first go.
