Dalton-Morgan took over command of the squadron.
Personnel were preparing to return to Australia when they were placed on standby for action over Korea; the squadron began flying missions as part of United Nations (UN) forces a week later.
There, Scharnhorst took over the role of squadron flagship.
Training was stepped up to qualify Israelis to take over vacated positions and the squadron settled into a peacetime routine, with the B-17s conducting bombing and cloud seeding tests and participating in IDF exercises.

Smith flew ten sorties with the squadron over the next month, and during the last of these, on 22 June, led a strafing raid against a large railway yard.
Having airlifted more than 17,000 passengers and evacuated over 300 injured troops, the squadron left Malaya in November 1952 and returned to No. 86 Wing at Richmond.
