Analysis and synthesis will focus on (1) assigning conceptual categories to the codes (ie, are these data about context, mechanism or outcome); (2) use of the data to configure context, mechanism and outcome configurations (CMOCs) and (3) use of the data to understand the place and relationships of the CMOCs with the programme theory.
Using a realist approach, in this review we elicit Context Mechanism Outcome Configurations (CMOC) from the RCTs.
We present the results in three parts: the intervention and context, the mechanisms and the Context Mechanisms Outcome configurations.

Producing a realist explanation requires a mix of data types, not only qualitative data, to provide explanations and support for the relationships within and between context mechanisms outcome configurations.
The second task will address the realist nature of this investigation, by seeking contingent explanations of the relationships between the existing codes around improvement work and the delivery of organisational strategy, in the form of context, mechanism, outcome configurations (CMOCs).
Data extraction focused on context, mechanism and outcome configurations within studies and on data which might assist understanding and explain; i) these configurations; ii) the relationships between them and; iii) their role and place in evolving programme theories arising from data synthesis.
Coding will be guided by the initial programme theory and the review questions of how food environment interventions work, for whom and under what conditions, with the purpose of exploring data on context, mechanisms and outcome configurations, patterns and stated programme theories for the included interventions.
