The O157 H7 serotype was first described in the literature in 1983 following two outbreaks of hemorrhagic colitis in a fast-food restaurant chain in Oregon and Michigan in 1982 [ 1, 2].

This multi-resistant strain, designated 630, was isolated from a patient with severe pseudomembranous colitis and caused an outbreak of diarrheal disease in a Swiss hospital [ 9].
