We used curves fitted to our acuity-illumination (Fig. 1), acuity-contrast (Fig. 2), and acuity-viewing distance (Fig. 3) functions to describe a series of "threshold acuity surfaces" which relate acuity to target contrast and illumination, for each viewing distance (Fig. 4).
Listening to music to block out the office intrusion doesn't help: even that, Perham found, impairs our mental acuity.
