At the Islamic center yesterday, Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Mali's minister of foreign affairs, Moctar Ouane, joined the grieving fathers, Moussa Magassa and Mamadou Soumare, pledging to aid them however necessary.
The Security Council members on this trip, in addition to Mr. Holbrooke, the delegation leader, were Sir Jeremy Greenstock of Britain; Jean-David Levitte of France; Martin Andjaba of Namibia; Peter van Walsum of the Netherlands; Moctar Ouane of Mali; and Said ben Mustapha of Tunisia.
There are also three experienced African diplomats: Martin Andjaba of Namibia, Said ben Mustapha of Tunisia and Moctar Ouane, who until recently was the diplomatic adviser to the president of Mali.
Samuel David, the assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case, requested a 14-year sentence, saying Mr. Ouanes had "exploited his age and appearance to lure the women back to his hotel" and was trying to use his age to evade punishment for his deeds.
Mr. Ouanes, a mechanical engineer employed by the construction company, was in charge of modifying the climate-control system in the prince's suite to match his tastes, according to court testimony.
Before the police arrived at Mr. Ouanes's room the morning of the rape, Nizar Adeeb, an employee of the Plaza who was assigned to focus on the needs of the entourage, was already there.
During more than two weeks of testimony, the jury heard the woman and a friend of hers, who said that in January 2010 they allowed the man, Mustapha Ouanes, 60, to follow them to two bars and then accepted his offer of breakfast in his hotel room, because he seemed harmless.
Mr. Ouanes, 60, argues that whatever happened that morning two years ago was consensual and that the women, friends who work as a bartender and a waitress in Manhattan, invented the rape allegation after he declined to pay for sex.
The wealth of Mr. Ouanes's employer, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Fahd, son of King Fahd, who died in 2005, was a recurring theme during the trial.
Mr. Ouanes faced as much as 25 years on each of the two most serious charges.
Mr. Ouanes, a citizen of Canada and Algeria, resided in Saudi Arabia before his arrest and will be deported at the end of his prison sentence, Justice McCullough said.
