Meta-regression analysis was performed to assess for possible sources of heterogeneity according to the following pre-defined variables: criteria used to initiate RRT (that is, creatinine, urea, or other), severity of illness (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health (APACHE II) score), type of critical care unit (mixed medical/surgical vs. surgical alone), and study design (observational vs. RCT).
