A curve-pair is composed of a primary and an orientation curve.
The orientation curve is an approximate offset of the primary curve.
A technique is proposed for maintaining the relation between the primary and the orientation curve when the curve-pair is adjusted.
For a given tool path, if the orientation curve crosses the singular circle, it is locally modified out of the circle with a bridge point locating schema and a cubic B-spline interpolation technique.
Eventually, the obtained new orientation curve goes around the singular circle like a rubber band to avoid the singular problem and remains unmodified to achieve the best machined surface qualities for the rest pieces.
The maximum in the sideways orientation curve occurs at the inflection point in the breakthrough curve at 420 s where approximately 90% of the inlet concentration is reached (compare with Fig. 6b).

After 6 min of adaptation, the orientation tuning curve exhibited the following properties (1) the response to the initial optimal orientation has considerably declined by 58% (2) two peaks are revealed by post-adaptation tuning curve.
The orientation tuning curve was fitted as the sum of two Gaussians centered on θpref and θpref +π, of different amplitudes but equal width, with a constant baseline.
In addition to calculating MIs based on the orientation tuning curve parameters, we also calculated MIs based on raw firing rates, using the above formulas, but replacing 'parameter' with 'firing rate'.
