The fit of alternate models was compared using their AICc (Akaike's Information Criterion -AIC - with a second order correction for small sample sizes, where smaller values indicate a better fit of the model to the data [28]); ln maximum likelihood ratio tests (LRT) were used to test for phylogenetic signal by comparison of the RegOU with the OLS models.
The maximum likelihood values for the trees are then used to perform a goodness of fit test with the AICc (Akaike Information Criterion with a second order correction for small sample sizes [ 55] and the BIC Bayesian Information Criterionn).
Another criterion similar to the BIC, but less strict, is the Akaike Information Criteria (AIC; [ 38]), for which the penalty only depends on the number of parameters: AIC = − ln p (D | θ ^ ) + K A second order correction for the AIC [ 65] has a negligible impact in the present context, and so is not reported here.
Interactions among all factor combinations were examined for significance along with temporal autocorrelation, and the best models were chosen based on Akaike Information Criterion with a second order correction for small sample sizes (AICc) (Burnham and Anderson 2002) and R values.
