Design of the illumination and imaging optics of the retina camera, using standard optical-design software, was the final step in realizing the experimental setup for dynamic retinal vessel analysis in rats (DVA-R).
Although the optics of the new camera are as far as we can tell unchanged since the X, the sensor is a new one and is worth looking closely at.
Second, prior to the assembling of the experimental setup, it was important to assess the complete system (rat eye model and optics of the retina camera) referring to in-vivo modulation transfer performance (see Fig. 7).

Even so, the result was a bright burned-out image with multiple reflections from the optics in the camera and the Sun that appears far larger than the actual dimension of the solar disk.
The second component, camera calibration, typically requires three sub-components: an assumption that the emission from the animal surface is Lambertian [ 19], modeling of the camera optics that transfers the light to the image plane, and measurement of the absolute camera response on a pixel-by-pixel basis.
The zoom lens uses internal folded optics that remain inside the body of the camera, rather than protruding from the camera, which Concord says keeps the camera compact.
The constructed system is presented in Fig. 1, where one may see a schematic sketch of the system (Fig. 1(a)) as well as an image of the camera with its optics and a laser illuminating a hand of a subject being fixed by gypsum to allow more accurate measurement (Fig. 1(b)).
