The regions with opposite modification signal patterns were considered as regions preferentially expressed in non-neural cells (assigned with a "non-N" flag).
When an initiation event occurs, in principle, the modification that is outnumbered is able to overtake the opposite modification but the probability of this event is relatively low.
This simulation, therefore, indicates that spontaneous boundary formation by opposing modifications may eventually lead to one modification dictating the opposite modification.

When sequencing through 4mC, the polymerase slows down only when incorporating the cognate nucleotide opposite the modification, with no significant secondary IPD ratio peaks [ 16].
In that study, ∼2700 of the assayed genes were found to have two opposite chromatin modifications in ES cells, H3K4Me2/Me3 and H3K27Me3, markers for active and silent chromatin, respectively.
On the opposite, important modifications of the distribution were observed between the GISA strain and any of the 2 glycopeptide-susceptible ones.
These apparently opposite histone modifications can be found either as sharply localized peaks (for example, around promoters) or as more extended domains structuring the genome into 'open' regions of activation or competence (euchromatin), and 'close' regions of long-term repression (heterochromatin).
The Cdx2 promoter, active in the trophectoderm and silent in the ICM, shows the opposite pattern of modification, consistent with its transcriptional status (Fig. 2).
