Haydn tended to publish his quartets in groups, and the Emerson's long and elegantly played afternoon, working chronologically, stopped off at the major sites: Opp. 20, 33, 64, 74, 76 and 77.
The idea for the Zankel concerts was something more modest, though still mightily substantial: to present the five late quartets (Opp. 127, 130, 131, 132 and 135) along with two works from Beethoven's middle period, the "Harp" Quartet (Op. 74) and the "Serioso" (Op. 95).
