While big ocean shipping companies owning and/or operating terminals and ports on foreign terrain is a standard operating procedure for the industry — Denmark's Maersk line is running terminals in 36 countries, Switzerland's Mediterranean Shipping Co. is operating in 22 countries, and Dubai Ports World is in 40 countries, for example — these are generally mono-faceted, shipping-centric operations.
At Kennedy's Terminal 4, the airport's only privately operated terminal, the iris-scan experiment has been under way for about two months.
"Unfortunately, the Bill of Rights, as it appeared in the International Arrivals Building, will never make a comeback," wrote Douglas Mandart, property manager for JFKIAT L.L.C., the private consortium that operates Terminal 4, the rebuilt International Air Terminal.
Forty artists were asked to submit proposals when J.F.K. I.A.T., the private international consortium that owns and operates Terminal 4, first opened its competition for the artwork that altogether cost about $1 million.
The recently opened ARK at JFK gives animals at John F. Kennedy Airport a 24/7 privately operated terminal with direct airside access in air-conditioned comfort.
The WNRL segment owns and operates terminal, storage and transportation assets and provides related services primarily to its refining group in the Southwest.
They include APL Limited, which is controlled by the government of Singapore and operates terminals in Los Angeles Oaklandd, Calif.; Dutch Harbor, Alaska and Seattlee.
Earlier this year, for example, the Williams Companies made an initial public offering in Williams Energy Partners, which owns and operates terminals for petroleum products.
"I think there's some specter that people from the Middle East are going to come over here and operate terminals," he said.
"I don't think anything like that is going to happen". Dubai Ports World is one of several foreign giants that operate terminals in ports around the globe; other big companies are from Denmark, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea.
