Draw a gradient on your layer mask.
Return to the light bulb icon on your Layer to change the filter.
To do this make sure your color swatch is selected as black and click on the paint bucket tool, then click on your layer 2. The image in layer 2 does not show up black on your screen but will change in your layers toolbar.

To do so, set one of your layers on a plate with the flat side facing up.
Click the eyeball icon on your layers palette to hide the Background Layer.
Alternatively, this can be done by dragging the background layer to the second-to-last icon on your layers panel.
A box will appear on the outside of your layer.
