We base our theoretical model of the articular cartilage on this leaf-like lamellar model of Jeffery et al., starting with a simple model with the assumption of constant azimuth angle orientation of the collagen fibers throughout the depth of the tissue [ 12].
For leaf traits, on September 2nd, 2003, one fully illuminated mature leaf was collected on each tree; this leaf presented the largest width along the main stem (Foliar Index between 15 and 17; see [ 27] for details).
Using the weight of the leaves collected, the following formula was used to calculate the total leaf biomass per individual: (dried leaf weight/number of leaves collected) × (total number of leaves on the plant) This leaf biomass was used to account for plant size in statistical analysis.
Furthermore, on this day, this leaf was at the rapid phase of elongation and thereby contained cells at all stages of development: from dividing cells in the basal meristem located near the point of leaf attachment to the node, to growing and mature cells at more distal locations.

For each replicate, two plants of N. tabacum were mechanically inoculated with 5 μL of this sap on one leaf.
3. Rinse the leaf three times with tap water (do not allow the water stream to strike the leaf), then leave the leaf in a water bath at room temperature for at least 10 min. 4.
