Try to schedule outdoor activities on days with a low pollen count.
The probable other reasons for reduced fruit set include reduced pollen viability, low pollen loads on stigmas, the absence of pollen tubes at the base of the style, small population size, space limitation, genetic load and climatic change which can cause low fruit set (Lamont et al. 1993; Hermanutz et al. 1998; Dorken and Eckert 2001).
In general, spatial structure did not have a strong influence on the simulation outcome, although low pollen dispersal and intermediate levels of seed dispersal tended to reduce population extinction rates.
However, this had no noticeable effect on the number of samples with low pollen number, because the discontinuity at approximately 10 pollen grains did not shift upward, allowing us to compare results between years without any adjustments.
Three findings in the present study are of note: i) low pollen viability impacts on seed set in water lotus crosses; ii) low stigma receptivity is a vital factor leading to low fecundity of water lotus crosses; and iii) embryo abortion is an additional factor leading to reduced fecundity of lotus crosses.
