Delia's result "exemplifies how parental and offspring strategies coevolve," says Tobias Uller, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, with the evolution of parental care affecting the evolution of the embryo.
Considering the consequences of antagonistic co-adaptation in the evolution of parent-offspring interactions might change predictions of conflict resolution theory, which assumed independent segregation of offspring and parental strategies [3], by, for example, constraining the evolutionary success of selfish and costly offspring strategies [16], [19], [32].
Because sedentary behavior appears to track from parents to their young offspring, strategies to reduce levels of childhood overweight/obesity need to effectively change parental as well as childhood screen time [ 14, 25, 32, 36].
To test the prediction that the evolved offspring solicitation strategy should depend on the evolved parental sensitivity strategy (expressed during the adult stage), we ran simulations with fixed parental sensitivity strategies (a1−a5).
Our results demonstrate that with the increase of climatic drought stress and associated desertification, the reproduction of C. stenophylla changes from more sexual reproduction to more clonal propagation; offspring establishment strategy changes from having more outside-shrub offspring to having only inside-shrub offspring; the clonal architecture changes from guerrilla type to phalanx type.
Critically, a successful offspring solicitation strategy increases its representation in the parental stage of the current generation, but has yet to spread to the next generation.
Clear differences between the sexes have been found in the programming of emotionality in the offspring and strategies for coping with stress, with the activational effects of testosterone producing females with male-like strategies in tests of passive coping, but with female-like behavior in tests of active coping [ 46].
