HM Revenue and Customs are pursuing the club over offshore payments made to staff around the turn of the century and, although Rangers have vowed to defend their claim vigorously, Johnston admitted a great deal of uncertainty remained.
The firm, which has become engulfed by a scandal involving offshore payments that has attracted the attentions of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, added that it may consider criminal complaints against former executives.
The real concern for Rangers is the judement they await from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs over a tax issue relating to offshore payments to players and the Murray Group Management Limited Remuneration Trust.
Johnston admitted that "but for the HMRC verdict, life would be a lot easier" and he acknowledged in his statement to the Stock Exchange the investigation relating to offshore payments to players and the Murray Group Management Limited Remuneration Trust.
The 'small tax case' is the £2.8m which first emerged last April, before Murray sold the club to Craig Whyte, due to similar offshore payments, but which has risen with interest and penalties.
Rangers, currently in administration, are still awaiting the outcome of the case regarding offshore payments made from 2001-10, whicoulduld cost the club up to £49m and which has been termed the 'big tax case'.
Other British initiatives included money for new offshore wind farms, payments to homeowners who generated electricity and heat with renewable power, and loans for installing rooftop solar panels that could be progressively repaid from savings on home energy bills.
There are no outbound payments going offshore.
