Anatomically, the cytoarchitectonic areas of the PMC are strongly inter-connected, and the PMC also has extensive external connections with higher-order association areas, namely the anterior cingulate, the mid-dorsolateral prefrontal, the lateral parietal cortices, the temporo-parieto-occipital area (TPO) [17], [18], as well as the dorsal-most sector of the thalamus [19].
Our intracranial work in the default mode network is rooted in the PI's earlier anatomical tracing studies of the PMC in the macaque brain that provided a comprehensive map of anatomical circuitry connecting the PMC with the rest of the brain including the regions of the brain that we currently record from.
