The smell of pyridine, a sweet odor that can be nauseating at higher concentrations, has drifted periodically over the Harriman area since Nepera's inception.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation has agreed to allow a chemical plant in Harriman to resume production of pyridine, an ingredient in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and shampoo.
The furor began on Oct. 26, when Nepera Inc., which has operated its single factory here since 1957, accidentally leaked a small amount of gaseous residue from its production of pyridine, an ingredient in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and anti-dandruff shampoo.
State officials had stopped all production at the Nepera Inc. plant for a week, beginning Feb. 25, and for two weeks it had halted production of pyridine, a known eye, nose and respiratory irritant, after two leaks from the plant.
