In a 1905 paper, Einstein postulated that light itself consists of localized particles (quanta).
Rather, relativity paints quite the opposite picture: a universe of localized particles that at any instant depend only on the other particles with which they are in direct contact.
At that time Einstein was deeply involved in the struggle to understand how atoms and light behaved, a 20-year quest that had begun in 1905 when had dared to suggest that light, which had been "proven" to be an electromagnetic wave during the 19th century, consisted of localized particles, which we now call photons.

The problem is that it follows from the uncertainty principle (see the entry on the uncertainty principle) that in such localizations the momenta and the energies of the localized particles would be totally uncertain, so that gases may spontaneously heat up and electrons may be knocked out of their orbits, in contradiction to our experience.
This is reminiscent of the localized particle-like wave solutions.
Bars with sand-coating show significantly reduced capacity when loaded in transverse compression compared to the fiber-wrapped surface, and microscopy reveals areas of localized contact with sand particles that support test results.
It has been established that in order to address the autowave of localized deformation, a quasi-particle may be introduced.
Such localization provides new opportunities for control of the atomic wavefunction, i.e., for atomic engineering, by application of a carefully tailored sequence of HCPs to produce, for example, wavepackets whose behavior mimics that of a localized classical particle.
The multiple band absorption property of the metamaterial absorber is based on the resonance of localized surface plasmon (LSP) modes excited near edges of metal particles.
This process also enables high-density four-dimensional strain mapping by tracking particles located in grains, providing direct interpretation of localized deformation caused by interaction between neighbouring grains.
These coarse particles disturb the grain structure near the particle/matrix interface, which facilitates the initiation of localized corrosion in potentio-dynamic scans.
