We used SVM light (http://svmlight.joachims.org/), an implementation of Support Vector Machines in C, and also used customized functions written in MATLAB (http://www.mathtools.net/MATLAB/) for the calculation of confidence score for each predicted candidate PID gene.
Positions were calculated using Multitrace-3/16 light (http://www.jensen-software.com/) by inspecting the integrity of the light curve day by day and fitting dawn and dusk times.
Second, we used a database of scanning electronic micrographs (Keller, 2011) and an online database of light microscopy images (http://www.antweb.org) to further assess the extent of the taxonomic distribution of the traits of interest.
