We used SVM light (http://svmlight.joachims.org/), an implementation of Support Vector Machines in C, and also used customized functions written in MATLAB (http://www.mathtools.net/MATLAB/) for the calculation of confidence score for each predicted candidate PID gene.
Positions were calculated using Multitrace-3/16 light (http://www.jensen-software.com/) by inspecting the integrity of the light curve day by day and fitting dawn and dusk times.
Second, we used a database of scanning electronic micrographs (Keller, 2011) and an online database of light microscopy images (http://www.antweb.org) to further assess the extent of the taxonomic distribution of the traits of interest.
It is intended to incorporate relevant data from more sources, including ERGO-light (http://www.ergo-light.com/) and UMBBD [27], in future developments of BiSSCat.
To illustrate this two step process, Appendices A and B present an example of a simple stream of light values, accessed over HTTP streaming and Web hooks.
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.06229.012 To measure the importance of light and odor changes during head sweeps, we subtracted the average derivative of light level during accepted head sweeps from the average derivative of light level during rejected head sweeps.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.02206.010 To further dissect the effect of light and darkness on ELF3-Sha, we measured LHY::LUC expression in ELF3-Bay and ELF3-A362V for 15 days with a defined regime of extended light and darkness.
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.01386.001 People can see in a range of light levels from dim moonlight to bright midday sun because our eyes contain two types of light-sensitive cells: rods and cones.
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.05981.004 We recorded responses to brief flashes of light in individual rod outer segments using suction electrodes (Yau et al., 1977).
