Similarly, ex-smokers had a significantly (P < 0.05) higher prevalence of increased waist circumference (69%) compared with never-smokers (60%) and current smokers (49%).
The rationale for using a combination of waist circumference and fasting triglyceride levels is to partially overcome the inability of waist circumference to discriminate between subcutaneous and visceral adiposity; raised serum triglycerides in the presence of increased waist circumference are more likely to indicate visceral rather than subcutaneous fat accumulation [ 4].
The prevalence of increased waist circumference (94 – 102 cm in men, 80 – 88 cm in women) and very high waist circumference (i.e. abdominal obesity, WC greater than 102 cm for men and greater than 88 cm for women) in the study participants is presented in Fig. 2. Figure 3 shows the prevalence of increased total cholesterol (> 5 mmol/l) and triacylglyceride levels (> 1.7 mmol/l).
Diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was, therefore, issued according to modified Adult Treatment Panel (ATP -III criteriATP -II) and requIred at least two of the following metabolicriteriaactors: plasma triglycerides ≥150 mg/dl, fasting plasma glucose ≥110 mg/dl, HDL cholesterol ≤40 mg/dl for men or ≤50 mg/dl for women, and BMI ≥30 kg/m (as a surequiredof increated waist girth).
