A swath of abandoned cropland surrounded by freeways and freight tracks would seem an unlikely place to breed exotic monkeys, let alone unravel a medical mystery.
The waste material was removed from the pit twice a year and injected into the cropland surrounding all sides of the confinement facility as a source of nutrients; however, at the time of sampling for this study, the injection of waste material had not been done in > 4 months.
The distributions of these clades can be superimposed on the major African floristic zones [ 23]: clade IV is recorded mainly from central African forests and croplands surrounded by a mosaic of forest and Sudanian savannah and woodlands of eastern Africa; clade III from drier Sudanian and Sahelian savannah; clade II from western African Sudanian savannah; and clade I mainly from Guinean forests.
The state fails to protect rangelands and regional stock routes from the extension of cropland by surrounding farmers or migrants, which jeopardizes the mobile herders' territorialities as confirmed by two pieces of evidence we collected during our field survey.

Globally, cropland was surrounded by 44 ± 28% non-crop habitat within 2 km [mean ± standard deviation (SD ], it was potentially lived in or moved through by 11±± 9 'threatened' and 'Near-Threatened' vertebrate species (mean ± SD) and its actual yield was about 35% of its potential yield (Table 3).
We surveyed 222 fencerows and fields cultivated with winter or summer crops, and characterised farmland complexity by the perimeter/area ratio of cropland in 2-km diameter circles surrounding each field.
The land that countries protect, often as national or regional parks, frequently comprises "islands" of original habitat surrounded by a "sea" of cropland, grazing land, or cities and roads.
GIS mapping of pesticide use patterns in the 1980s compared with the 1990s, however, showed there has been some change at the neighborhood level because former cropland and surrounding buffers have been turned into residential areas.
Animal yards and manure storage facilities at larger facilities, especially modern beef cattle and dairy farms may occupy tens of hectares, often surrounded by additional hundreds of hectares of cropland also treated with manure (Harter et al., 2002).
