Many archaeologists say they hope it will eventually become open to a much broader group of scholars and conservators around the world to view and add to, or comment upon, the information in the database.
"Around 95percentt of conservators play dual roles of conservator of the person and conservator of the estate, while about 5percentt are different people or private or professional conservators," says Kirk McIntosh, a Costa Mesa, California-based probate and estate planning attorney.
In one trailer, a group of conservators, all women, were restoring small wooden objects.
Upon the advice of conservators, the entire archive was removed to freezers to stop the mould.
"A pair of conservators were there overseeing the gathering of materials going to Washington," Kates said.
