Surgical treatment is the primary management of colorectal cancers, with 75 80% of the patients being operable at the time of diagnosis (Boring et al, 1991; Vernaba et al, 1994).
In one study of 131 patients, considered to be operable following CT, 24% were found to be technically unresectable (i.e. T4 disease), and 35% had mediastinal nodal involvement[ 3].
Doctors thought it was too deep to be operable.
"I estimate that there are about 22 rigs sitting idle around the lake, but not all of them are operable, due to lack of maintenance, or because they require additional equipment," he told me.
Only about 10%% of BTC are operable at the time of diagnosis.

The experimentally designed GAT regimen showed a fairly similar efficacy profile in terms of response rate and time to progression, and results were particularly interesting for the small group of stage IIIB patients, who all responded to treatment and the majority of whom were operable.
"In principle, this approach could push the line of what is operable a little bit further down the road," he said.
By the end of the day on July 20, only 65 of the KPAF 1st Air Division's original aircraft were intact, and only 34 of them were operable.
Eighty-five per cent of patients were operable after induction treatment.
