The quantitative changes in bioenergetic function (ECAR, ATP-linked OCR and maximal OCR) in MCF-7 and MCF-10A cells following treatment with Mito-ChM and washout with time are shown in Additional file 3: Table S1.
Together, the effects of greater c-fos activation in LEC during OCR and of impaired OCR in LEC lesioned rats demonstrate that the LEC is required for OCR.
These effects of increased BACE1 were confirmed by real-time OCR analysis demonstrating reduced glucose oxidation with unaltered myotube OCR in response to palmitate (Fig. 4i, j) giving an overall reduced myotube oxygen consumption for combined substrate (Fig. 4k).

In panel a basal OCR in the septic control group was significantly less than that measured in the gentisic septic group.
In panel c uncoupled (maximal) OCR in the septic control group decreased as compared with the other groups in which we used a FCCP of 4 μM (i.e., maximal) in the analysis.
The GCR follows a similar trend as the OCR, in which it can be observed that the GCR rapidly approaches the OCR as λ increases and consequently it performs better than the SS, B-SS, CR, and the MFR.
When we administered ADP to the preparation, OCR in the septic control group increased to an extent not much different than that found in the non-septic control group (Fig. 3b).
In contrast, when we added the protonophore FCCP at 4 μM to the preparation, there was a large increase in OCR in the non-septic control group (Fig. 3b) that was attenuated in the septic control group (Fig. 3a).
