Empty Lot is the title of Abraham Cruzvillegas's new Turbine Hall installation for Tate Modern – a soaring plank and scaffolding construction veering like a ship's prow through the oceanic space, bearing aloft what amounts to a vast multi-part allotment.
The sea remains a major concern for power, sovereignty and resources, but the key issue of monitoring and surveillance systems at the relevant scale (the whole oceanic space) still seems to be considered as secondary.
Instead of a building type, it is a place of shifting perspectives; a phenomenal platform dedicated to a feeling of oceanic space and the immeasurable.

At the University of Michigan, she wrote her doctoral thesis on comet thermophysical nuclear modeling and earned a PhD in atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences.
"The tunings would evoke an emotional atmosphere – sometimes they would conjure up a sense of being in a vast desert, or oceanic feelings, or infinite space," he says.
