For this purpose, we estimate a regression model of occupational rates as a function of average productivity, controlling for unemployment rates and for time and region fixed effects, using the AACC data.
Figure 2a, b is complemented with Fig. 3 that shows the occupational rates predicted as market equilibrium for different values of (b) in the interval 1.4 and 1.6, and observed rates from all AACC and years.
In the two figures, we also plot occupational rates (observed and adjusted after removing the variations in SEWNEs resulting from the time evolution of unemployment rates8) and observed productivity, respectively, in the period 1980 2006.
The results, not reported, confirm that the empirical evidence is consistent only with changes in (b). Figure 2a plots the predicted market equilibrium occupational rates (Eqs. (7), (8) and (9)) and Fig. 2b shows the predicted average productivity (Eq. (10)) for selected values of parameter (b), and the remaining parameters at their base values.
For occupational rates, the denominators were calculated by summing the annual employment estimates including both "employed at work" and "employed but absent".
Some indicators can be helpful in performing a gap analysis, such as employment indicators (e.g. vacancies rates, growth of the workforce, occupational unemployment rate and turnover rate), activity indicators (e.g. overtime), monetary indicators (e.g. wages), and normative population-based indicators (e.g. doctors/populations ratios) [ 3].
For example, Fritschi and Driscoll [12] use Finnish estimates of the proportion of cancers caused by occupation to estimate occupational cancer rates in Australia.
