Deposition of a hydrophobic self-assembled monolayer onto the tip enables the minimisation of the interfacial free energy of the tip-sample contact, with such good effect that images are obtained in contact mode with comparable resolution to that observed in tapping mode.
Figure 7a shows the deflection image obtained in contact mode for P. fluorescens.
Figure 7 shows typical deflection images of living 158N cells, obtained in contact mode, cultured in the absence or presence of 25-OH (10−5 M) and/or Dex (10−6 M) during 24 h.
From the image scanned, at least 5 locations on various ridges were marked and force vs indentation curved were obtained in contact mode using a silicon nitride probe with a square pyramid tip (κ = 0.32 N/m; α = 36°, PNP-TR-50, Nano and More, Lady's Island, SC).

Most of the topographic images are obtained in contact-mode AFM, in which the cantilever is in touch with the sample incessantly during scanning; changes in the cantilever deflection are monitored and kept constant using an electronic feedback loop (7, 8).
The AFM images of AuNPs were obtained in the contact mode on a Dimension™ 3100 Atomic Force Microscope (Digital Instruments, Veeco Metrology Group, Santa Barbara, CA, USA).
All the surface images were obtained in the contact mode using silicon nitride tips with approximate tip radius of 10 nm, and the height of the surface relief was recorded at a resolution of 256 × 256 pixels.
In addition, no steric effects reminiscent of a tightly packed polymer brush (45) were obtained in the contact region of the force curves (Figs. 4 and 6).
Conventional catalyst/soot mixtures were obtained in tight contact mode by mixing the appropriate amount of Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 with soot (Printex U by Degussa) in an agate mortar for 10 minutes.
Use of organic solvents directly on a surface apparently results in more complete removal of chlorpyrifos residues, but it may overestimate doses obtained in dermal contact or hand-to-mouth activities, where the solvent would be saliva, sweat, or the sebum layer on the skin (Edwards and Lioy 1999).
Surface imaging was obtained in non-contact mode using silicon/aluminium-coated cantilevers (PPP-NCHR 10 M, Park Systems, Suwon, South Korea) 125 mm long with a resonance frequency of 200 to 400 kHz and nominal force constant of 42 N/m.
