Runner Mick McGeoch, 55, said: "When I finished I knew it was short". A race spokesman said: "The safety of all runners and spectators was our primary concern when making such decisions and the change in the course had to be undertaken when an obstruction was identified by race organisers.
In all cases, venous obstruction was identified on the basis of venography performed (either in the radiology department at least 1 day prior to the procedure or in the cardiac catheter laboratory on the day of the procedure) prior to each procedure to ascertain the patency of the venous system.
In contrast with the dark-gray signal of the normal myocardium, the microvascular obstruction was identified as a dark zone, usually located in the subendocardium within the hyperenhanced, infarcted myocardium, on both early (3 min post-contrast) and late (12 min post-contrast) gadolinium-enhanced images (Figs. 1b, 2b, 4a, b) [ 5].
For each problem area, a set of possible interventions with the potential to reduce obstructions and difficulties were identified.
