The traditional answer, proposed by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, is that the act of observation collapsed the wavefunction "so that you find the object only in one place" (p. 178).
Not only does it draw an uncomfortable distinction between the observer and what he is observing; it also fails to answer the question of exactly how the act of observation collapses the wave function.
