Between 1990 and September, 2009, the Federal Register published notices related to the repatriation of 1,142,894 funerary objects, 38,671 human remains, 4,303 sacred objects, nine hundred and forty-eight "objects of cultural patrimony," and eight hundred and twenty-two objects of "sacred and cultural patrimony".
The 1990 law affects every museum and federal agency that owns "Native American human remains and associated funerary objects" as well as "unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects or objects of cultural patrimony".
