In order to improve the accuracy of these assays, we and other research groups are now focused on the identification of novel molecular endpoints to be assessed by more objective and quantitative means, such as gene expression analysis based on real-time RT-PCR and flow cytometry (Seiler et al. 2004; zur Nieden et al. 2004).
