The word "nut" is a correct and usable word in written English.
You can use it as a noun to refer to the hard-shelled seed of various trees or plants, or as a slang term to refer to someone considered to be crazy or eccentric. For example: "My grandmother is a bit of a nut—she loves telling silly jokes and always wears the most outrageous outfits."
