On both materials, they formed long slender protrusions on the basolateral membrane, they were very rich in mitochondria, contained numerous nuclei, and showed signs of the presence of a clear zone facing the implanted material.
The characterization of the mixing process allows for a better understanding of rubrene nanocrystal synthesis: a fast supersaturation induces the generation of numerous nuclei, which limits the crystal growth.
However, the coexistence of numerous nuclei within a common cytoplasm and mitosis phases that are not easily distinguishable causes many difficulties in studying mitosis in coenocytic fungi, although exceptions have been reported in Basidiobolus ranarum [ 20].

Finally at longer times, a third type of smaller and more numerous nuclei were observed (Fig 1c), some of them being already detected at earlier times and located close to the previous ones (Fig 1b).
Numerous nuclei epitaxially formed and the size of the crystals was very small.
Importantly, staining of infected HepG2 cells with DAPI showed that ZIPCO-F EEFs had only a small number of nuclei, including at late time points, in contrast to the numerous nuclei in WT-F EEFs (Supplementary Fig S4B).
