The reason for this behaviour is that the probability of a positive match for a route is decreasing with the number of segments in it: the longer a considered source route is, the more unlikely it is that a homologous counterpart exists in the target map.
To fit model (1), we minimize the penalized least squares criterion (2) ∑ j = 1 p (y j − z j ) 2 + γ · | S | with respect to the sequence z1,…, z p. Here, | S| denotes the number of segments in S, and γ>0 is a constant that controls the trade-off between seeking a good fit to the data (the first term) and restraining the number of level shifts (the second term).
The model can be divided into a finite number of segments in the longitudinal direction with each individual segment having a unique characteristic resonant frequency, decreasing from 20 kHz, at the base, in the human, to about 200 Hz at the apex over the 35 mm BM length, as shown in Figure 11.
For a number of segments in the range of 1 to 20, the success rate of GIMME degrades more slowly with the number of segments than the success rate of RNMDSO: e.g. for routes with 20 segments, GIMME has a success rate of 98.0%, whereas the estimated success rate for RNMDSO is only 92.3%, a difference of 5.7%.

Quantitative image analysis at 10 dpa revealed that NTR+MTZ fish exhibited a significant reduction in the average number of segments in the regenerated ray (P<0.04, Fig. 3A,C), although bone segment width was not significantly altered (Fig. 3D).
