At each site, (i) necropsy and intestine examination was undertaken on a sample of shot foxes (total number of foxes, 222), and (ii) fox faeces were collected in the field along road verges, and scored for degradation status (total number of faeces, 625).

The number of faeces successfully genotyped per individual ranged from 1 to 6 (mean 1.56, SD 1.05) for the entire study period and from 1 to 5 (mean 1.36, SD 0.80) for the 2007 sampling period, with the majority of individuals sampled only once in either sampling schemes (entire study period: 84/121; 2007 sampling period: 47/61) (Figure 4).
