I think what's most offensive about Leon Wieseltier's scummy (to borrow his term), supercilious and gallingly fatuous+dismissal of Nicholson Baker's novel "Checkpoint" is that Wieseltier scoffs at the general idea that the Bush administration is a+radical one, the likes of which we have rarely, if ever, seen in this country.

Baker caused a stir in 2004 with his slim novel "Checkpoint," in which the protagonist wants to assassinate President Bush, and an outcry in 2008 with "Human Smoke," which gathered newspaper clippings, diary entries and other contemporary sources to make a pacifist case against World War II.
