AmSouth Bancorp, which operates 650 branches in six states in the Southeast, said in a regulatory filing yesterday that it was under investigation by the United States attorney in Mississippi over accusations of a "fraudulent note scheme".
Note scheme 4 is symmetric in calculating both of the actual and expected number of edges of the two groups.
But officials said this case also underlined some of the difficulties they have had in prosecuting promissory-note schemes.
The particularly insidious element of the promissory-note schemes, the authorities say, is that the elderly are often defrauded by people with whom they have successfully done business in the past.
As one interviewee noted, "schemes are malleable post implementation…[it has] a controversial typology and is ad hoc" (UK Researcher 4).
The suit accuses them of swindling 69 people, most of them elderly, out of more than $3.8 million in a promissory-note scheme that included making investments in petroleum, entertainment, technology and transportation companies.
Note that schemes (C) and (D) both satisfy progressivity and income order preservation.

A little-known group (which prefers to be low-profile) called the Note Circulation Scheme (NCS) handles the physical distribution of cash notes in the UK.
But Clegg's aides noted that schemes to help the fuel-poor, such as the Warm Home Discount scheme worth £135m to two million poorer customers, would be more progressive if funded by general taxation rather than a flat levy on consumers.
