Although primarily intended as descriptive, the data presented in this paper may have significant pedagogical value, notably with respect to teaching ESP to students and practitioners in the pharmaceutical field.
In laying out the argument, Barney offers an extensive and compelling look at a variety of pedagogical treatises, most notably John Locke's Some Thoughts concerning Education, a work that, in its emphasis on limits to personal liberty, may surprise those familiar primarily with Locke's Second Treatise on Government.
We do, though, think that the processes of biological evolution and both notably more effective than most traditional pedagogical postures in producing a diversity of organisms, including humans, able to cope effectively with their environments--provide some guides to more effective forms of pedagogy in the more exclusively human realm, as well as a foundation on which to build them.
Besides criticisms of existing pedagogical practices and theories, most notably Rousseau's Emile (1762), the Vindication contains many social and political proposals which range from a detailed outline of necessary changes in school curriculum to the suggestion that women be granted not only civil and political rights, but have elected representatives of their own.
Notably, most instructors in our study did not reveal knowledge about every component of pedagogical knowledge, and there was a considerable variation in what knowledge instructors used (Fig. 4).
