"northeastern" is a correct and usable word in written English.
You can use it to refer to any geographical location that is located in the northeastern region of a particular area, or to describe something related to that area (i.e. northeastern culture, northeastern cuisine, etc.). For example, "The Northeastern United States has some of the country's most beautiful landscapes."
