All patients had to have acceptable bone marrow function, defined by neutrophil counts ⩾3.5 × 10/l, platelets ⩾100 × 10/l and Hb⩾5.6 mmol/l; and adequate hepatic and renal function defined as creatinine clearance ⩾50 ml min−1, total bilirubin ⩽1.5 times the normal upper limit, and ASAT and ALAT ⩽2.5 times the normal upper limit (or ⩽5 times the normal upper limit in case of hepatic metastases).
Nineteen (7.1%), 4 (12.5%), 14 (23.3%) and 23 (39.0%) participants in Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively, had LS values above the normal upper limit and the proportions significantly differed among the four groups (x2 = 37.54, p < 0.0001).
