Analyses by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary-ion mass spectrometry have revealed that the level of nitrogen incorporation is about 10%, and the composition distribution of both carbon and nitrogen atoms normal to the coating surfaces is homogeneous.
When no mechanical straining of the TBC system is considered, local tensile stresses normal to the coating surface within the ceramic top coating reach values of up to 330 MPa at room temperature for a critical TGO thickness of approx. 3 μm.

Compared to the non-corroded coatings, the large out-of-plane stress that was normal to the YSZ/bond coat in the CMAS corroded coatings promoted the diffusion of Cr, Co and Ni ions, which significantly improved the growth of mixed oxides (such as Cr2O3, NiO and spinels) and thickened the TGO layer which eventually resulted in the spallation of TBCs.
The inner layer consisted of columnar α-Al2O3 grains normal to the surface of the coating.
The treatment may be validly applied to scatterers whose boundary surfaces must have no sharp corners or edges which will introduce a discontinuity in the direction of the unit vector normal to the core and/or outer coat surfaces.
It is shown that fatigue cracks nucleate at the surface of the coating and propagate normal to the substrate coating interface without bifurcation along the latter, after going through the entire coating thickness.
These cracks follow a Mode I path, normal to the substrate/coating interface, are arrested at the Γ/δ1 interface and continue to propagate parallel to the coating/substrate interface resulting in the delamination and failure of the coatings.
A 10 nm titanium layer and a 100 nm gold layer were then evaporated at an angle relative the surface normal to coat only three of the optically transparent SU-8 surfaces.
Myopic (nearsighted) eyes are particularly prone to retinal detachment because they are larger than normal, and the coats of the eye are thinned and stretched.
Elastic deformations were considered and an algorithm was suggested to calculate normal and shear stress across the coating thickness for various numbers of layers and layer thickness.
It indicated that nAg is likely to dissolve under normal soil conditions and that the coating of nanoparticulate Ag and the physicochemical properties of the soils are likely very important when determining the integrity, retention and mobility of silver nanoparticles.
