Today, Mr. Walsh's collection includes more than 80 art quilts, in which contemporary artists apply nontraditional techniques and materials to an age-old form.
But it also locates his constructions within the broader, fast-moving history of postwar object-making, both American and European, with its attention to found materials, abstract forms and nontraditional techniques and, above all, its fusion of painting and sculpture.
